The Magician is the first numbered card of the Tarot journey. After The Fool takes that first step into the unknown, The Magician
appears and says: “Now look around. You already have what you need.” The Fool begins with possibility.
The Magician begins with awareness.
Many beginners memorize The Magician as “manifestation” or “having the power to create,” and while this is true, the deeper message is about recognizing your own abilities and learning how to direct your energy with intention.
The Magician reminds us that we are not powerless observers in our own lives. We have tools, talents, experiences, and resources available to us — but we must choose how to use them.
The Magician asks:
✨ What gifts or abilities am I ready to put into action?
✨ Where am I waiting for something outside of myself instead of recognizing what I already have?
✨ How can I turn my ideas into intentional action?
Symbols to Notice:
🪄 The Wand Raised Toward the Sky
The Magician connects inspiration from above with action here on Earth. This represents taking an idea, vision, or intention and bringing it into reality.
🪙 The Four Tools on the Table
The cup, sword, wand, and pentacle represent the four suits of Tarot and the different parts of ourselves:
Cups — emotions and intuition
Swords — thoughts and communication
Wands — passion and creativity
Pentacles — the physical world and resources
The Magician reminds us that we are whole beings and we use all of these parts together. These are tools at our disposal.
♾️ The Infinity Symbol Above His Head
The infinity symbol represents unlimited potential, continuous learning, and the connection between the seen and unseen worlds.
🌹 The Red Roses and White Flowers
The flowers represent the balance between passion and purity, action and intention, desire and awareness. When the Magician shows up in a reading, ask: “What resources, skills, or knowledge do I already have that I may be overlooking?” And also ask: “Am I truly creating with intention, or am I simply reacting to what is happening around me?”
Tarot is not about predicting a fixed future. It is a tool for self-reflection, awareness, and understanding the patterns unfolding in our lives.
In my Tarot classes, we go beyond memorizing card meanings. I encourage my students to look at the cards before opening the book. We explore the images, numerology, archetypes, and connections between the cards so they can learn to recognize the story Tarot is sharing. For more info on upcoming tarot classes, click here
